The situation highlights the risks faced by cargo carriers and the high stakes involved when transporting valuable perishable goods across oceans.

A Singapore-flagged cargo ship carrying $60 million worth of cherries broke down in the Pacific Ocean, causing major delays to its delivery. The Maersk Saltoro, part of a special "Cherry Express" service transporting fresh cherries from Chile to China, suffered an engine failure on January 13, leaving it stranded for weeks.

The breakdown caused concern as the cherries are highly perishable and were meant to arrive in time for the Chinese New Year market. Repairs were made, and the ship resumed its journey on February 4. It is now expected to reach Guangzhou on February 17, but the delay could lead to massive financial losses.

Authorities in Singapore are investigating the incident. The ship is managed by the same company that oversaw the MV Dali, which crashed into a bridge in Baltimore last year. While the crew is safe and the refrigerated containers are powered, questions remain about the impact on the cherry cargo and future safety measures for Singapore-flagged vessels.
