Bracera derives from the Italian expression forza di braccia, meaning “power of hands” because the vessel was moved by oars.
Braceras formed the backbone of the commercial fleet on the Adriatic Sea with one masted one being the most prominent and best known.
The beautiful vessels were used for trading between different places, transporting goods and people over long distances.
This boat with wide hips and a blunt bow was particularly suitable for commerce and communication between the many islands of the Adriatic as well as neighbouring coasts.
The Dalmatian islanders were more comfortable building smaller and cheaper bracers than larger and more expensive trabakuls and peligs (Larger sisters of a Bracera).
Also, bracera was the most convenient vessel for the narrow sea areas between the many (over a thousand) Adriatic islands.
There are three types of bracera: single mast, double mast and triple mast. All types have their own unique characteristics but they share one thing in common, they all use oars to propel themselves through the water.
But, the one with a single mast is the most famous.
One of the oldest models of bracera is “Roditelji”. She was built back in 1907 in Piran, today Slovenia. She was built without any machining, entirely as a handwork of old craftsmen and made of quality oak.
Bracera has been modified over time—in the mid-20th century, she was given motor propulsion and became an 8-knot motor sailboat.
