At the launch event on March 17, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng praised Pyxis and WaterB for their innovation. He emphasized that these vessels showcase how clean energy can be both functional and commercially viable, merging tradition with modern technology in Singapore’s maritime sector.

Singapore is making waves in sustainable transportation with the launch of its first solar-powered electric boats. Local maritime start-up Pyxis has developed these eco-friendly vessels, known as Pyxis R ferries, which will begin service on the Singapore River in April 2025.

These ferries will gradually replace half of WaterB’s existing fleet, with two boats arriving in April and the remaining eight delivered every other month until the end of 2025. Each boat features solar panels that generate about 22 kilowatt-hours of electricity daily, enough to power 20 HDB flats in total.

Since river boats mostly operate in the evenings and at night, the Pyxis R ferries will use the afternoon sun to recharge while on standby. The energy generated reduces reliance on Singapore’s electricity grid, making operations more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. According to Pyxis founder and CEO Tommy Phun, the energy required to operate one boat is equivalent to running three to four hairdryers.

A key innovation in these ferries is their vehicle-to-grid technology, which allows them to return excess power to the grid. This feature turns the fleet into a “floating solar farm,” potentially powering micro-waterfront projects like events on floating piers.

WaterB’s director, Darren Tan, highlighted the economic benefits of these ferries. The solar-powered boats will lower the company’s long-term operating costs by 30 to 40 percent. Even on cloudy days, the solar panels can generate enough energy to power at least half of the daily operations. Passengers will also enjoy a smoother and quieter ride.

River cruises on Pyxis R ferries will operate between Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Marina Bay. Tickets cost $28 for adults and $18 for children, available on WaterB’s website and ticketing kiosks.

With these advancements, Singapore is setting a new standard for sustainable tourism and green energy solutions on water.
