Here are some simple tips to help you feel confident when it’s time to place your bids.

Thinking about buying a boat through an online auction? It’s a great way to find a deal, but it can also be a bit tricky if you’re not prepared.

Here are some simple tips to help you feel confident when it’s time to place your bids.

1. Do Your  Research

Get as much information as you can about the boat you're interested in. Remember, boats in auctions are sold ‘as is, where is,’ so it’s crucial to know the exact specs and compare prices online before making a bid.

For extra peace of mind, you can always hire a Boat Buyer’s Advisor. An independent expert can help you assess whether the boat is truly the right fit for you.

2. Inspect the Listing Thoroughly

Take the time to carefully review the auction listing. Read every detail, examine the photos closely, and consider scheduling a viewing or a virtual inspection. If you’re looking to go the extra mile, you might also want to request a sea trial—just remember that this will be at your own expense. Additionally, don’t forget to ask for a recent survey report to get a clearer picture of the boat's condition.

3. Check the Paperwork

A boat with missing or incomplete paperwork can lead to headaches later on. Always ensure the boat has proper documentation, including title papers, maintenance records, and any warranties. If anything looks unclear, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification.

4. Research the Terms and Conditions of the Online Boat Auction Platform

Before the online auction, it’s essential to plan for any additional costs associated with your purchase. First, ensure you have your financing arranged, as most online boat auction platforms typically do not offer financing options. On the day of the auction, you’ll usually need to pay a 10% deposit, which is non-refundable and applies whether or not you complete the purchase.

Don't forget to factor in the buyer’s premium, which can range from 4% to 12%, as well as the costs associated with physically transferring the vessel. For example, if you live in Australia and purchase a boat in Singapore, you’ll need to arrange and pay for its transport back to you.

5. Set a Maximum Budget—and Stick to It!

It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of bidding, but don’t let your emotions take control. Before the auction starts, establish a firm budget and stick to it. This discipline will help you avoid overbidding and regretting your purchase later.

Remember, buying a boat is a significant investment. It shouldn’t be a snap decision. Many people find themselves in deep water at this point, so the best deals come when you’re confident enough to walk away if necessary. At an online boat auction, being impulsive or hotheaded can drive the price up against you. Stay calm, monitor the situation, and only take action when you’re sure.

At Online Boat Auction by BASCO, the auction runs over a seven-day period, giving you plenty of time to strategize and make your move.
