The newly released Roadmap 2050 for a Net-Zero future is a strategic plan that outlines clear environmental targets, set in five-year milestones. Endorsed by 60 top CEOs from the yachting industry.

In a bold step towards environmental accountability, the Water Revolution Foundation (WRF) has launched a comprehensive roadmap to reduce the superyacht industry's harmful impact to zero by 2050. WRF, founded in 2018 and based in Amsterdam, is a non-profit group that works to make the industry more eco-friendly through innovation, science, and industry collaboration

The newly released Roadmap 2050 for a Net-Zero future is a strategic plan that outlines clear environmental targets, set in five-year milestones. Endorsed by 60 top CEOs from the yachting industry during a recent meeting hosted by Sanlorenzo in Italy, the roadmap reflects strong and growing support from within the sector.

So, let’s discuss what makes this initiative a strong move.

One of the key pillars of the roadmap is the Life Cycle Approach, which looks at every stage of a yacht’s life. From its initial design and construction to daily operation and eventual refits. This approach helps identify the environmental impact at each phase, offering a clear picture of where improvements can be made.

Rather than addressing sustainability in isolated parts, it encourages a holistic, long-term view. With this data-driven strategy, the industry can reduce its ecological footprint in a realistic and measurable way.

“This roadmap is our compass,” said WRF’s Executive Director Robert van Tol, “and collaboration is the only way we’ll make meaningful progress.” His sentiment is echoed by Dr. Vienna Eleuteri, WRF’s vice chair and one of the roadmap’s chief architects, who calls it a “shared promise to each other, the ocean, and future generations.”

To support transparency and accountability, WRF plans to introduce a centralized monitoring system that will track progress across the industry. All trade associations are encouraged to embed these targets into their strategic plans, not as a formality but as a statement of unified responsibility.

Participation in the roadmap is voluntary, yet it reflects a proactive approach from within the superyacht industry. Rather than waiting for external regulations, stakeholders are choosing to take initiative by setting measurable goals and working toward a unified vision. The roadmap goes beyond current environmental standards, aiming to push progress rather than simply meet compliance requirements.

Roadmap 2050 serves as a strategic framework rather than a binding agreement. It represents a collective effort to align the industry with global sustainability goals, offering a structured path forward and encouraging responsible practices through shared responsibility and data-driven targets.
