  • Discover the Best Sea Boat Ever Built - The Old Cape Islander!

The Cape Islander is a type of fishing boat that is widely used in Atlantic Canada, particularly in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. - Basco Boating News - Written by BASCO Team < Back Share Discover the Best Sea Boat Ever Built - The Old Cape Islander! BASCO Team Mar 5, 2023 The Cape Islander is a type of fishing boat that is widely used in Atlantic Canada, particularly in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Did you know that the Cape Islander has been celebrated in a number of festivals and events? In Nova Scotia, there is an annual "Cape Islander Day" celebration that includes a parade of boats and other festivities to honor this beloved Canadian fishing boat. The Cape Islander is a type of fishing boat that is widely used in Atlantic Canada, particularly in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. It's named after Cape Island, a small island off the southern coast of Nova Scotia where the boat was first developed in the early 1900s. The Cape Island style boat is famous for its large step up to the bow. They are known for being good "sea" boats, and riding the swells well. It has a distinctive V-shaped hull, which allows it to navigate through waves and choppy seas. The boat is typically used for lobster and scallop fishing, but it has also been adapted for use in other types of fishing and transportation. Over the years, the Cape Islander has become a beloved symbol of Canada's maritime heritage, and it continues to be an important part of the country's fishing industry today. It originated on Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia about 1905. Two families claim credit for its invention. The design is most commonly credited to Ephraim Atkinson of Clark's Harbour, Nova Scotia. The Atkinson family builders have continued building pleasure and commercial boats to this day. The other claim to the boat's design is an accomplished boat-builder from Clark's Harbour, William A. Kenney, who is said to have constructed the first Cape Islander entirely from wood in 1905. Here are some of the main uses of Cape Islander boats: Lobster fishing: Cape Islander boats are particularly well-suited for lobster fishing, as their V-shaped hulls and pointed bows enable them to navigate through rough waters and strong currents with ease. They are typically equipped with traps, bait, and other fishing gear. Scallop fishing: Cape Islander boats are also commonly used for scallop fishing, which typically involves dragging nets along the seafloor. The sturdy, seaworthy design of the Cape Islander makes it well-suited for this type of fishing. Other types of fishing: In addition to lobster and scallop fishing, Cape Islander boats are used for other types of fishing, including groundfish, herring, mackerel, and tuna fishing. Transportation: Cape Islander boats are also used for transportation purposes, particularly in coastal communities where roads may be limited or non-existent. They can be used to transport people, supplies, and equipment to and from remote locations. Recreational Boating : Some people also use Cape Islander boats for recreational purposes. In conclusion, the Cape Islander boat has a rich history and cultural significance in Canada. As a versatile and reliable fishing boat, it has played an important role in the country's fishing industry and transportation for over a century. The Cape Islander has been recognized as a Canadian cultural icon through postage stamps, boat registries, heritage designations, and museum exhibits. Today, the boat remains a beloved symbol of Canada's maritime heritage and continues to be used for commercial fishing and other purposes. P.S. If you're new to boat ownership, the first step might be the hardest. • Debunking Myths About Boat Surveys: What They Do and Don’t Cover

However, there are many misconceptions about what a survey actually includes and just as importantly, what it doesn’t. - Basco Boating News - Written by Aziza | BASCO Team < Back Share Debunking Myths About Boat Surveys: What They Do and Don’t Cover Aziza | BASCO Team Feb 1, 2025 However, there are many misconceptions about what a survey actually includes and just as importantly, what it doesn’t. When buying a boat, a marine survey is one of the most important steps in ensuring you're making a sound investment. However, there are many misconceptions about what a survey actually includes and just as importantly, what it doesn’t. If you’re relying on a survey to catch every possible issue, it’s crucial to understand its real scope. Myth #1 : A Marine Survey Guarantees a Problem-Free Boat One of the biggest misconceptions is that a marine survey guarantees the boat is in perfect condition. In reality, a survey provides an expert assessment of the boat’s current state, highlighting existing issues and potential risks. However, it doesn’t mean the boat will never develop problems in the future. Boats, like any mechanical equipment, require ongoing maintenance and repairs. Myth #2 : A Surveyor Will Check Every Single Component While marine surveyors conduct thorough inspections, they focus on critical structural and mechanical elements. This includes the hull, deck, engine (to some extent), electrical systems, and safety equipment. However, they do not typically dismantle systems, perform in-depth engine diagnostics, or check cosmetic features in detail. If you need a more in-depth inspection of the engine, hiring a marine mechanic separately is recommended. Myth #3 : A Survey Eliminates the Need for a Sea Trial A survey conducted while the boat is on land or in the water at the dock is valuable, but it doesn’t replace a sea trial. A sea trial allows you to see how the boat performs under real conditions, how it handles, accelerates, and if there are any unusual noises or vibrations. Some issues only become apparent when the boat is moving, making this step essential. Myth #4 : All Surveys Are the Same Not all marine surveys follow the same process. Some are conducted for insurance purposes, while others are meant for pre-purchase evaluations. The level of detail and scope can vary based on the type of survey you request. Before hiring a surveyor, clarify your needs so you get the right inspection for your situation. What a Marine Survey Does Cover? A properly conducted survey will give you a comprehensive report on: The overall structural integrity of the boat Signs of damage, corrosion, or previous repairs The condition of electrical, plumbing, and fuel systems Safety equipment compliance Potential areas of concern that may need further inspection What a Marine Survey Doesn’t Cover A deep mechanical analysis of the engine and transmission A guarantee that no future problems will arise Cosmetic flaws unless they impact functionality The performance of the boat under different conditions (which is why a sea trial is important) A marine survey is an essential tool in the boat-buying process, but it’s not a magic solution that guarantees a flawless boat. Understanding what it includes and what it doesn’t, helps you make informed decisions, avoid costly surprises, and ensure that you’re getting the best boat for your needs. If you’re serious about a purchase, combining a survey with a sea trial and an independent engine inspection is the best way to move forward with confidence. Thanks for reading this article. The Dragonfly 25 Sport Trimaran is a well-designed boat from Denmark, made for both adventure lovers and casual sailors. Dragonfly boats are known for their quality, combining speed, stability, and comfort in one. This 2018 Dragonfly 25 Sport model shows off everything people love about the brand, a high-performance trimaran with smart features that make it a great pick for anyone who enjoys water sports and wants to have a better experience on the water. Here are five reasons why the Dragonfly 25 Sport is the ultimate choice for those ready to dive into a world of speed and excitement. 1. Built for Speed The Dragonfly 25 Sport is made for speed. With its taller, 11.9-meter carbon fiber mast and big black sails, this boat can reach up to 17 knots (about 20 mph) when sailing. The special design helps it pick up speed fast while staying easy to control, perfect for anyone looking for excitement on the water. 2. Unique Swing-Wing System The Dragonfly 25 Sport has a patented Swing-Wing system, which makes it different from other boats. This feature allows the side floats to be pulled in or extended easily, so docking and storing the boat is super simple. In under a minute, you can adjust the floats, giving you the benefits of both a trimaran and a smaller monohull. 3. Spacious and Comfortable Interior This boat may be compact, but it’s surprisingly roomy and comfortable inside. It has two cabins and four sleeping spots, perfect for small groups or family outings. The clever design makes great use of the space, and large windows bring in plenty of natural light, making it bright and pleasant for overnight trips. 4. Well-Maintained and Fully Loaded The current owner has kept the Dragonfly 25 Sport in nice condition. Recently, the boat got a fresh Coppercoat antifouling in October 2023, a new Tohatsu 6 HP engine that was also serviced in October 2023, and updated Dyneema rigging. Plus, it’s equipped with modern navigation tools like a Raymarine chartplotter and wind gauge, which make it easy and safe to sail. You can personally view and ask for a surveyor report. 5. Ready for All Adventures The Dragonfly 25 Sport is built for all kinds of adventures. Its shallow draft from 1.15 to 5 feet allows it to explore shallow waters where other boats can’t go. With options like a self-tacking jib, full mainsail, and a Code Zero sail, it’s ready for any wind conditions, whether you’re cruising calmly or going full speed. The large cockpit with a bimini cover and solar setup also makes it comfortable for longer trips or fast, thrilling rides. • What's COOL about Catamarans?

You know the word, "catamaran"...but I bet you didn't know it came from the Tamil language spoken in India! - Basco Boating News - Written by BASCO Team < Back Share What's COOL about Catamarans? BASCO Team Feb 2, 2023 You know the word, "catamaran"...but I bet you didn't know it came from the Tamil language spoken in India! You know the word, "catamaran"...but I bet you didn't know it came from the Tamil language spoken in India! In Tamil, the boats are called kattumaram. Kattumaram means "tied wood." The name refers to how catamarans are constructed: two pontoons attached to a platform. This type of boat is widely used by fishermen in South India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. The cool thing about a catamaran is that it's a type of boat with two hulls connected by a bridge. It's like having four legs on the water! Catamarans can be used for both recreational and sporting purposes, as well as for transportation. In fact, they are just as comfortable as they are crazy fast. This means that, even if you're going full-speed, you won't feel like you're on a roller coaster! And one more thing: catamarans can carry a lot of weight, they can carry more people than regular boats without being much bigger, which makes them a fun choice for parties. Catamarans are considered more stable and much faster than monohulls, which have a single hull. "Catamaran" is a bit of a mouthful, so feel free to call it a “cat” We hope you found this information helpful. -- Do you want to understand the boat market & boat ownership like a boat boss, but don’t know where to start?
