Northumbria holds the inspiring tale of Grace Darling, a local heroine who risked her life in a raging storm to rescue shipwrecked sailors off the Farne Islands in the early 19th century. Few will recall the distinctive features of Grace’s wooden boat, which is now housed at her namesake museum in the village of Bamburgh, with its broad sides, flat bottom and high bow. But only some people will know that her boat was a coble – a vessel peculiar to the northeast and one that is disappearing. The coble boat is a type of fishing boat traditionally used in the North East of England. It is a small, open boat with a flat bottom and high sides, designed for fishing in shallow waters. The distinctive shape of the boat — flat-bottomed and high-bowed — arose to cope with the particular conditions prevalent in this area. Flat bottoms allowed launching from and landing upon shallow, sandy beaches; an advantage in this part of the coast where the wide bays and inlets provided little shelter from stormy weather. However, fishermen required high bows to sail in the dangerous North Sea and in particular to launch into the surf and to land on the beaches. The design contains relics of Norse influence, though in the main it shows Dutch origin. The coble is usually propelled by a sail or oars and has a small cabin or shelter for the fishermen. In modern times, Cobles generally use diesel engines, removing the need for the distinctively shaped lug sail. The modern cobles often have a small wheelhouse forward, perhaps a half deck to shelter the engine, and gantries to support line haulers; both possible because there is now no sailing gear. That’s all for today! If you have any questions about Coble, please let us know. P.S. If you don't know what's going on in the boating world, you'll be at the mercy of wheeler-dealers who want to take advantage of you. Sanlorenzo Asia Pacific has expanded its footprint in Southeast Asia with the launch of Sanlorenzo Thailand. A new division formed through a strategic partnership with Thai entrepreneur Vrit Yongsakul. The move focuses on exclusive sales and representation of Sanlorenzo and Bluegame yachts within Thailand. This step follows a decade of steady growth for Sanlorenzo in the Asia-Pacific region. Over the years, the brand has worked closely with Simpson Marine, a well-established yacht dealership based in Hong Kong. In March 2024, Sanlorenzo acquired Simpson Marine, further strengthening its position across markets like Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, and Vietnam. With the formation of Sanlorenzo Thailand, the company aims to provide more direct support and service for Thai clients. The new headquarters will be based in Phuket, a key location for yachting in the region. Vrit Yongsakul , who now heads Sanlorenzo Thailand, brings more than 20 years of experience in yacht sales and marine operations. He has played a role in developing Thailand’s boating infrastructure and growing the local yachting community. According to Daniele Lucà , CEO of Sanlorenzo APAC and Simpson Marine, Vrit’s knowledge of the Thai market and background in the industry made him a strong choice for this role. Sanlorenzo’s APAC division follows the company’s global "Made-to-Measure" approach, providing custom yacht design and delivery tailored to each owner’s preferences. Over 100 Sanlorenzo yachts have already been delivered across Asia-Pacific, and the brand continues to invest in regional service hubs. The Thailand hub will support Southeast Asia, while another hub in Hong Kong serves North Asia. Thailand already hosts a number of Sanlorenzo yachts and superyachts, and this new collaboration is expected to offer better access to local service and expertise. - Maryland Boating Fees Rise for the First Time in Four Decades
The extra revenue will flow into the Waterway Improvement Fund, which supports projects like dredging, boat ramp upgrades, and access improvements. - Basco Boating News - Written by Aziza | BASCO Team < Back Share Maryland Boating Fees Rise for the First Time in Four Decades Aziza | BASCO Team Sep 30, 2025 The extra revenue will flow into the Waterway Improvement Fund, which supports projects like dredging, boat ramp upgrades, and access improvements. For the first time since 1983, Maryland is increasing its boating fees. Starting October 1, 2025, boat owners across the state will see higher costs for registrations, titles, and stickers. State officials say the change is long overdue and necessary to keep up with inflation. What’s Changing? The standard two-year boat registration fee jumps from $24 to $70 . A certificate of title will now cost $20 , compared to the old rate of just $2 . The state use sticker rises sharply from $10 to $70 . For the first time, owners of non-motorized vessels, such as kayaks and canoes, can voluntarily register their craft for $12 . Officials calculated the new registration fee based on inflation, which would have placed it around $73, but decided to round it down to $70. The extra revenue will flow into the Waterway Improvement Fund , which supports projects like dredging, boat ramp upgrades, and access improvements. The funding cap for grants will double to $500,000 , allowing more communities and organizations to benefit. State leaders argue this will reduce the program’s reliance on outside funding and ensure waterways remain safe and accessible. Not everyone is happy about the jump. Some boat owners worry the new fees are too steep, especially for retirees or families on fixed incomes. Others question whether the funds will directly benefit everyday boaters, fishermen, and recreational users. Supporters, however, say the increase was inevitable after 42 years without an adjustment. They believe the improvements will ultimately make boating safer and more enjoyable in Maryland. Maryland’s boating community is facing a new era of higher costs. While the fees may feel like a burden for some, state officials promise the money will go toward better access, safer waterways, and more opportunities for boaters. Whether the community sees those improvements in practice remains to be seen. Media Gallery ← Previous Next →
