Together, they aim to deliver a world-class harbour that competes with top destinations in the Mediterranean and Asia-Pacific. The Road to Completion Construction is already underway, with Dock B completed and 11 pontoons installed, providing space for 48 berths. A soft opening in December 2025 will allow visiting yachts to access basic services, while the full launch is planned for the third quarter of 2026. Pelindo’s president director, Arif Suhartono, emphasized that Bali Gapura is just the beginning. Aziza Ahmed Mar 5, 2022 “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” It’s true… All you need is the skill to adjust the sail. It’s time to “Ready about” Do you know what it means? “Ready about” is a nautical term that sailors used to give a command to their crew to change the course of a ship by tacking. "Ready about” is the order to prepare for tacking. And when you hear the term “tacking,” do you wonder what it means? Tacking is when you change tack (direction), going from side to side – it’s a sailing term. Tacking is the process of turning your boat around so that it heads in the opposite direction. This can be done for a number of reasons such as avoiding obstacles changing course or reaching a destination. Did you know tacking is an old technique? In the 1st century CE, the Greeks began using sails that allowed for tacking and jibing. The technological advancements are believed to have been introduced by Persian or Arabic sailors. So, tacking is not a new skill, it’s something that has been done by sailors for centuries. “We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” It’s true… All you need is the skill to adjust the sail. When you're sailing a boat, there are a few things you need to remember in order to tack it successfully. First, make sure you're at the right angle to the wind - if you're sailing too close to the wind, you won't be able to make any progress. Second, make sure you're heading in the right direction - if you're going the wrong way, you'll only end up spinning in circles. Finally, use your body weight to help swing the boat around - lean into the wind and push the tiller in the opposite direction. This will help get the boat moving in the opposite direction. As an aspiring sailor, Don't stress over tacking. Once you get the hang of it, you'll realize that it's not that big of a deal, and you won't let worrying about it keep you from going upwind. You probably think of boats as being for far-away adventures and long-distance travels, but did you know that there's one boat specifically for fishing? It's called a Bass Boat. Bass boats are a type of fishing vessel that is designed to catch bass, or fish. In general, these boats can vary in size from about 16 feet to 25 feet, with the cheapest bass boats in the smaller size range. Bass boats are usually powered by an outboard motor, and they usually have seats for more than one person. Bass boats were first created in the 1800s and have since been modified to be more effective at catching bass, but they have remained relatively unchanged in their basic design. The first bass boat was built out of wood and did not have any motors attached to it. The fisherman would row the boat along until he found a spot where he could drop his line into the water and wait for a bite. In addition to its basic design, a bass boat has several other features that make it an ideal choice for fishing. First, it has an open bow area where you can sit and wait for your prey; second, it has an enclosed cabin area where you can store your gear; third, it has a small motor so that you can power through shallow waters; fourth, it has two rods so that you can catch multiple fish at once; fifth, it has two anchors so that you can keep the boat stationary; sixth, it has a live well so that you can keep your catch alive until you're ready to take them home with you; seventh (and last), it has a bucket holder so that you don't accidentally drop your keys overboard while trying to reel in one big one! And the amazing thing about Bass boats is - they don't have to be used just for fishing—they're great for all kinds of outdoor adventures! Bass boats tend to be narrow and long, with a pointed nose that allows them to cut through waves easily. They also have high sides so that water does not get into the boat as easily when it is being moved around on land or in water. The hulls of bass boats are usually of fibreglass or aluminium; fibreglass is lighter than aluminium but less durable. But bass boats aren't great for long trips because they don't have a lot of fuel capacity. This means that you'll need to stop frequently to refuel during your trip, which can interrupt the flow of your trip. And, the ride is pretty rough and bumpy due to the boat's size and shape. It's not ideal for anyone who gets seasick easily, or those who don't like being bounced around by waves. For the first time, the Cape Town Boat Show will be led and managed by local marine organisations, “SABBEX”(South African Boat Builders Export Council) and “BlueCape” in partnership with the V&A Waterfront. Unlike previous years, where the event was managed by external organisers, this year’s show will be guided directly by key industry bodies. “This is a boat show by the industry, for the industry,” organisers shared. “It will operate on a cost-only, breakeven basis, but still meet international standards.” Following global examples where boat shows are often owned and directed by industry associations, SABBEX and BlueCape will set the strategic direction, while a dedicated operations team will handle logistics, execution, and on-the-ground experience. The idea is to combine deep industry knowledge with event expertise to create a sustainable, long-term solution for South Africa’s leading boat show. This year’s show will run from October 24–26, and hopes are high for a strong comeback after a dip in attendance over the past few years. In 2023, just over 4,000 visitors and 61 exhibitors attended, down from nearly 8,500 attendees and 93 exhibitors in 2018. But with a new leadership model and fresh energy, there’s optimism that 2025 will set a new standard. Adding to the buzz is the African Boating Conference, taking place at the V&A Waterfront from October 21–22, just ahead of the boat show. The conference aims to highlight Africa’s growing marine industry, including bold plans to position Cape Town as a superyacht service and repair hub. SABBEX and BlueCape are also working closely with industry partners to attract quality exhibitors and increase footfall, while reinforcing the boat show’s long-term value to the sector. “With collective support, this boat show will become the flagship event for South Africa’s marine sector — uniting, strengthening, and setting the course for a thriving future,” said the organisers. The Cape Town Boat Show has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1995 at the Royal Cape Yacht Club. We bought our first boat (yes, unbelievably we were first-time boat buyers at around, plus or minus, 50-years of age) almost 10 years ago now, isn't it incredible how time flies. Now, 10-years on and pushing 60 years of age (well one of us anyway lol), we have new goals and family milestones to attend to! While neither of us really want to disrupt the incredible boating lifestyle, boating events, marina memories, boat owner friends and on-water activities that we have been privileged to enjoy over the last 10-years, the time has gone by so very quickly, we must prepare for the next stage of our lives, and reluctantly this includes putting our beautiful boat Sea Kiwi on the market for sale. Yes, we will be buying a replacement boat, but it will be much smaller! Sea Kiwi for sale is a 1999 Navigator Pilothouse 61' Flybridge Motor Yacht and we'll be running a series of videos featuring "Boat Guru" William Schick about what it will take to get our boat ready for sale and on the market and how we will go through the process of a sale. Sea Kiwi has been an incredibly lovely boat to own and liveaboard over the last 5 years or so since we sold our house and officially became "boat people". Living aboard has been fabulous for us at our age and stage. When we first viewed Sea Kiwi, there were so many remarkable things about the boat that it was scary how quickly it was obvious that it was the exact right boat for us. From the swim platform, to the two entry doors into the cockpit, to the fact that we could accommodate not only an 8 seater dining table there, and many other features of this boat made it perfect for us. Our 3 children had all left Singapore for work and study in Australia and New Zealand so it was an ideal time for us to embrace the lifestyle that suited our recent "empty nest" situation. Not to mention my unexpected and therefore quite distressing redundancy from corporate Singapore 5-years ago, boat life has been soothing for the soul and a great place to manage the crazy busy-ness of building a brand new company. So, what does it take to prepare your boat for sale? Follow us over the next weeks and months while we scrub, polish and maintain Sea Kiwi so she is in the best light to be passed to her new owners.
