I think it's the precision, accuracy, and clarity of detail in which sailors speak that makes us want to learn more about them. I think it's safe to say that we are all familiar with some Nautical terms, even if it's just "ahoy" or "adrift". So, let's take a look at another nautical term today and see how it developed and why it is important today. Bareboat Charter. The term “bareboat” is used to refer to a boat rental agreement, by which one may rent a boat without a crew. A bareboat is a type of agreement in which a renter purchases the right to use a boat without additional services. Bareboating is often done to save money or to get the bareboat charter operator time on the water while they look for steady paying work. From the early days of sailing, the rise of the bareboat charter has been traced back to wealthy merchants looking for a way to make money. In those days, ships were often owned by wealthy merchants who hired captains with crews and cargo to sail on voyages that could last for months or even years at a time. At the end of the voyage, there was no guarantee that any profits would be returned to them; in fact, they were often left out of the loop entirely. To avoid this situation, merchants began hiring crews themselves and purchasing ships outright, which they would then rent out to captains who needed them for voyages. This allowed merchants to maintain control over their ships' use and profit from them directly. This gave birth to what we know today as bareboat chartering—a practice where an owner rents out his or her ship for a specified period of time at an agreed-upon price. A bareboat charter is a perfect way to get out on the water without having to worry about the ownership details. You can rent a boat from a marina, or you can rent from a private owner. Either way, you'll need to make sure that your boat is insured for whatever length of time you're planning on using it. According to the broker, the lending solution can be arranged for company boat buyers with interest rates from 2.5-4.5%. There is a processing fee of between 3-5% depending upon the loan amount. BASCO was interested to hear about this service, as it is generally difficult to get yacht loans. We know of two banks who do so under varying conditions. For larger yacht purchases in the 3+ million there is typically more ready finance available, including an established yacht finance house in Taiwan. The Singapore Yachting Festival 2025 wrapped up in style at ONE°15 Marina Sentosa Cove, running from 10 to 13 April. Despite the wet weather, the event welcomed over 12,000 visitors, showing just how much love there is for the world of yachting. This year’s edition was bigger and better than ever, with more than 100 participating brands — including over 20 making their debut at the show. On display were 70 yachts, including 10 premieres, two global debuts, and 15 yachts longer than 24 metres. The festival wasn’t just about numbers — it was also about innovation, experience, and global interest. Arthur Tay, Chairman & CEO of SUTL Group and ONE°15 Marina, expressed how proud the team was of the turnout and the event’s success. He said, “The response to SYF 2025 has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors, exhibitors, and partners praising the curated experiences, innovative concepts, and range of yachts. It’s a strong affirmation of Singapore’s growing stature as Asia’s premier yachting hub. As the organiser, we’re proud to witness the continued expansion in both scale and impact, and we remain committed to raising the bar with each edition—delivering deeper engagement, stronger sustainability efforts, and broader global partnerships.” The largest yacht at the festival was the 56-metre Charley 2 by Echo Yachts, capturing attention with its sheer size and design. The event also featured several exciting debuts. The Azimut Seadeck 7 by Azimut|Benetti Group stood out with its eco-conscious design, built to reduce emissions by up to 40 percent. Ferretti Group introduced the Wallywhy150, known for its 270-degree wrap-around view and luxurious main-deck master cabin. Gulf Craft’s Nomad 101, made for long-range cruising with a 1,000 nautical mile range, also drew significant interest. Among the other highlights, DCH Marine presented the Sunseeker 90 Ocean, offering a 30 percent increase in deck space and a unique Beach Club feature. Cayago Luxury Sea Toys showcased their F9 Seabob models for the first time in Asia, and Camper & Nicholsons introduced “Song of Songs,” a 42.2-metre charter yacht built by Heysea.
